Jane Khoo
Singaporean-born
Jane Khoo began her dance training at the age of three in Chinese
cultural dance at Singapore Dance Ensemble. She graduated ten years
later with distinctions in the Beijing Royal Dance Academy curriculum
that included ballet technique, acrobatics and Chinese cultural
dance. Jane performed throughout her school years in numerous
national
cultural events, stage and television productions. She was selected to
train with the National University of Singapore Dance Ensemble
in contemporary dance and jazz and honed her flair for
performance through many staged productions, public events and
education programs of the university cultural calendar. In Melbourne,
Jane received silver and gold medals
in Dancesport Latin Ballroom and Street Latin respectively and
continues training in various dance styles. Jane
appeared in an original solo performance for a dance film ‘The
Aesthetic Journey’ in 2005.
In tandem with her
passion as a performer, Jane has pursued her distinct choreographic
voice. She has choreographed (and performed) a broad range of pieces
for the Flare Dance Ensemble in various public events and annual
productions since 2001. Her 2006 choreographic
effort 'Desert Storm' with a cast of 25 dancers, received critical acclaim: “the earthy rawness of the bodies
in Desert Storm
was perfectly complemented by crisp choreography and timing, and simple
but visually arresting costumes.”
Jane’s
first attempt at artistic direction was in 1997 for a dance
dramatisation ‘CollegeCollage’ at Raffles Junior College, Singapore.
Jane established the Flare Dance Ensemble of Melbourne University in
2001 and directed its
inaugural production ‘Ignite’ in 2002. She was awarded the ‘Louise
Homfrey Prize’ for her outstanding contribution to theatre and dance in
the University of Melbourne. She remained as Artistic Director for the
next five years and staged highly successful productions in the Union
House Theatre: ‘Footnotes’, ‘Rhythmicity’, and ‘Limelight’. The growth
of the ensemble culminated to its fifth anniversary show in 2006 with
‘Elements’ described by one reviewer as “a tightly woven journey,
executed with moderate fuss and maximum professionalism, much to the
delight of the full house”.
Flare
Dance Company Inc. was established in 2007 to extend Jane’s
vision into the community to offer amateur and emerging dancers and
choreographers an opportunity to pursue their passion. As FDC's Founding Artistic Director, Jane directed its past productions 'Metamorphosis', 'In Essence,' and 'Reflections' and continues to lead the company in creating new works across dance genres and cultures.
Jane graduated from Melbourne University and subsequently
completed her doctorate at Latrobe University. She currently works as a
Clinical Neuropsychologist. Jane continues to have a mentoring role in the
Ensemble and encourages collaborative works between ensemble and company
dancers to ensure continuity of the
Flare Dance vision.
